Inquiry Question For 2022-2023 3-D AP Portfolio

My inquiry question so far is: what do the stories we tell reflect about our society and how we view women in that society?

To answer this question, I looked at mythology and stories from folklore and religion.

The women in the stories I found fit into 4 main archetypes: the weak damsel/girl, the violent/arrogant hothead, the seductress, and the crone.

For my final art piece, I felt it was important to include the audience in the artwork, so to have them looking through a mirror at the mythical women felt important and necessary. I included the origami cranes that could be unfolded and read because: 1. cranes are a symbol of femininity, 2. i wanted the viewer to learn something, and 3. paper cranes are extremely cool and fun to make

Written Evidence 2: I started off with simple portraiture of women because that is what I was interested in. Then my focus shifted to the way women are viewed and discussed in modern media. To portray this, I looked to expressionism and fauvism to represent abstract ideas of what it means to be a woman and to imbed it with my portrayal of goddesses. My desire was to convey women's perceived value and how it affects an individual's personhood. The stories we share only illuminate a small part of the plot. Thus women are constricted into categories based on what people want them to be, not representing who they truly are
